Sophie Gauld

WHA Player Spotlight

Welcome back to our feature player spotlight. For May's feature, we caught up with one of the feistiest players we've ever had the honour of working with. Please welcome Sophie Gauld

We asked Sophie some questions so everyone can get to know her better. Here's what she had to say:

  • WHA: Hi Sophie, how have you been? We've been working with you for several years, but for before but for those that don't know you, what position do you play?

  • Sophie: I am a centre with the Atom A/AA Sudbury Lady Wolves

  • WHA: What's your favourite hockey number? What number do you wear when you play?

  • Sophie: My favourite number is 97, but I usually try to wear number 11

  • WHA: Who is your favourite hockey player?

  • Sophie: My favourite players are Rebecca Johnston, Hayley Wickenheiser and Kendall Coyne

  • WHA: Those are three great players! Can you tell us why you love hockey so much?

  • Sophie: I started playing hockey at the age of four in Playground hockey. I loved it right away. Mostly because of the speed of the game, my teammates and how hard I get to work and learn new skills.

  • WHA: What is your favourite part about playing hockey?

  • Sophie: I love the way I feel on the ice. It feels like home. It's my pride and joy!

  • WHA:  What do you feel you bring to the ice that would motivate young girls to take up hockey?

  • Sophie:  I feel I can bring my energy and passion that I show on the ice – girls can skate and play hockey just as well as the boys.  Dream big and work for your goals.  Always look up, get up and DON’T EVER GIVE UP!!!

  • WHA: Finally, what is your favourite memory about playing this great sport?

  • Sophie: I played 2 years mickey mouse/tyke hockey, then I tried out for the Novice Lady Wolves when I was 6 years old and made the team.  it was my first time playing with all girls and the Sudbury Lady Wolves.  I loved it.  I am now 10 yrs old and have been playing with the Lady Wolves for 5 years.  I love the competition, practicing hard with my teammates and going to tournaments.  One of my favorite goals was my first goal I scored as a Lady Wolf, it was a 5-hole on the goalie, I was so happy.  My other favorite goal was the winning goal I scored in a game to get to the semi finals at the Paint it Purple Tournament last year in Ottawa (playing first year Atom).  I was so happy!!

Thank you so much to Sophie. We love watching you grow as a player.

For everyone out there that likes watching the sport played the way it should be, you should definitely find out when Sophie Gauld is coming to town!
